Biagio da Cesena was an Italian Renaissance diplomat and papal court official. He initially served as a secretary to Pope Julius II before becoming his master of ceremonies. He also served under several other popes, including Leo X and Clement VII.
Biagio was known for his sharp tongue and wit, and he frequently clashed with Michelangelo over the artist's work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Biagio objected to the nude figures depicted in the artwork, which he believed were inappropriate for a holy place. Michelangelo responded by painting Biagio as Minos, the judge of the underworld, in the fresco of the Last Judgment.
Aside from his role at the papal court, Biagio was also a talented musician and composer. He wrote several motets and madrigals, and his music was well-regarded during his time.
After his death in 1544, Biagio's legacy was largely tied to his conflicts with Michelangelo. His role as a diplomat and musician is often overlooked in favor of his reputation as Michelangelo's nemesis.
